Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide an internal combustion engine provided with a fuel injection valve and a fuel atomizing device both disposed in a combustion chamber thereof wherein detection of a fuel injection period for operating the fuel atomizing device only when the fuel injection valve operates to inject fuel can be effected accurately and in a simple construction.
CONSTITUTION: When fuel is injected from a fuel injection valve 2, a needle seat 22 of the valve 2 is moved upwardly against a spring 23 so that a piezoelectric element 30 is operated by the spring 23. Consequently, a voltage is caused to appear at an electrode plate 29 by the piezoelectric element 30, and this electric signal S1 is processed in waveform at 33 and is then input to an ultrasonic wave oscillator 12 and to a discharge control circuit 34. An ultrasonic vibrating element 6 is thus operated by the oscillator 12 to atomize fuel injected from the injection valve 2. Also, a transistor 35 is brought into conductive after a delay of a predetermined interval of time by the discharge control circuit 34 so that a spark is generated at an ignition plug 3 through an ignition coil 36 to ignite and burn fuel.
