Abstract
PURPOSE: To manufacture sound steel ingots having no microsegregation, by preventing the surfacing of molten steel by flowing the molten steel in the solid-liquid coexisting area toward the lower part of mold by an electromagnetic force when steel ingots are solidified.
CONSTITUTION: A mold 5 is made of cast iron for the section 20W80% from the bottom and the remaining upper section is constituted of refractories 6 having a shell 7 with 10W50mm thick stainless steel. The molten metal is charged into the mold 5 and an electric current is supplied to an electromagnetic stirring coil 9. The electric current is increased as the solidification of molten metal progresses. When the electric current is increased, the elctromagnetic force is also increased. This power supply is continued until a steel ingot solidifies completely. Since the value of electric current is set so that the flow speed of downward flow of the molten metal between the front end position of crystallized steel (a) and the position of completely solidified steel is regulated to approx. 5cm/min and the surfacing of molten steel in the inverted V shaped segregation area is prevented, it must be determined by considering the quality of the shell 7, the solidified amount, the thickness of refractories 6, the structure of electromagnetic stirring coil 9, the specification of power source, etc.
