Abstract
PURPOSE: To enhance damping effect by constituting the energy absorbing part, in the steering shaft in such a way that a retainer material is deformed and by supporting a time lag between the peak load on the acting part and the peak load on the energy absorbing part.
CONSTITUTION: A steering shaft 12 is supported through a bearing 11 fixed at the top of column jacket 10. Right over the bearing fitting part in the steering shaft 12 is excavated an arc-profiled groove 13, whose center of curvature O is situated further outside for a distance of l than the diameter D of the sterring shaft. The bottom face of a retaining member 14 is placed in close contact with the top of bearing 11 while the retaining member 14 is in engagement with the groove 13, and the top face of this member 14 is protruded toward the steering wheel. At the time of collision, accordingly, a peak load which deforms the retaining member 14 into swollen diameter is applied to be followed by the frictional force.
