Abstract

PURPOSE: To form fiber reinforced composite metallic members having various shapes by using specific alumina fibers are reinforcing fibers for intermediate blank materials of simple shapes and forging final forms from the intermediate blank materials under specific temp. conditions.
CONSTITUTION: The reinforcing fibers used are alumina fibers which have a compsn. of ≥72wt% Al2O3 and ≤28wt% SiO2, and which do not exhibit reflection of α-A2O3 in X-ray diffraction. Generally, fibers of about 0.1W50mm lengths are preferable for these and the preferable shapes are simple shapes such as square columnar and circular columnar shapes. It is possible to substitute about ≤10wt% based on the total weight of the fibers with oxides of Li, Be, etc. The metals used are iron of ≤1,700°C m.p., an alumina alloy, etc., and these are forged at high temps. higher not by ≥20°C than the lowest temp. at which the liquid phase of matrix appears, whereby the final forms are produced with less damages upon the fibers.
