Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled fibers having high adsorptivity in high yield, by making organic fibers infusible, coating the top surfaces of the fibers with a heat-resistant material permeable to an activating active gas, carbonizing and activating the resultant fibers in the close contact state, and uniformly activating the fibers.
CONSTITUTION: Infusible fibers 2 obtained by making organic fibers infusible are contained in a cylindrical container 1 consisting of a graphite felt, etc., and at least the top surfaces of the fibers are enclosed with a fluidizing deformable layer 3 consisting of a heat-resistant material permeable to an activating active gas, e.g. alumina particles. The whole container 1 is then introduced into an open-hearth furnace, etc., kept in a nitrogen atmosphere at 900°C for 3hr to carbonize the infusible fibers 3. An activating active gas, e.g. steam, is then introduced into the furance to activate the fibers at about 900°C. The container 1 is then taken out of the furnace to afford the aimed active carbon fibers.
USE: Adsorbents for air cleaners, etc.
