PURPOSE:To perform a high-precise detection which is hard to be influenced by noise and the like, by a method wherein, in each of 2-phase position detecting signals having a phase difference by 1/4 period from each other, a voltage level of a part being located close to a center level of an amplitude is set as a comparision level. CONSTITUTION:A position detecting signal A is compared with an amplitude comparing level of an amplitude comparing level set circuit 3 by a comparing circuit 4. The amplitude comparing level sets a plural number of levels, being close to the center level of the amplitude of the position detecting signal, as an amplitude comparing level. A position detecting signal B is different in phase by 1/4 period from the position detecting signal A. The signal B performs a level comparision at a comparing circuit 7 and in a similar manner described in the signal A. The outputs of the comparing circuits 4 and 7 are inputted to comparing signal change detecting circuits 5 and 8 to output change detecting signals CHANG, A and B, and in case the change is positive, change codes UPA and UPB are outputted. From said signals, position information and speed information are found.
