Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the cavity defects and gas hole defects of cast ingots in a belt and wheel type continuous casting method by making the spacing position of a belt on the side of removing the ingot gradually earlier upon starting of casting and directly water cooling the exposed ingot. CONSTITUTION:Upon starting of casting, a wheel 17 is located in the upper part and molten metal is charged from the side where a rotary wheel 1 and a belt 2 begin to contact through a pot 9 and a spout 10 into a mold 8. Cooling water is sprayed to the outside circumferential surface of the mold 8 to solidify the molten metal. A bar-like cast ingot 11 is drawn out continuously. When the surface temp. of the ingot 11 attains the temp. at which the solidification of the inside ends, the wheel 17 is lowered gradually, and casting speed and cooling conditions are controlled to space the belt 2 in approximately a horizontal direction in the final. The ingot 11 is cooled to the extent that the solidified shell is formed in the mold 8, and after the spacing of the belt 2, the ingot is cooled effectively by the cooling water sprayed directly to the ingot.
