Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain indoxyl useful as an intermediate for indigo dyes, industrially and advantageously without using any alkali hydroxide, by reacting an N- phenylglycine salt with an alkali metallic amide in the presence of an inert high- boiling organic solvent.
CONSTITUTION: An N-phenylglycine salt, e.g. sodium or/and potassium salt, is reacted with an alkali metallic amide in the presence of an inert high-boiling organic solvent having a boiling point ≥180°C, preferably ≥200°C, preferably a usually available heating medium, e.g. an alkylnaphthalene heating medium, to give the aimed indoxyl in high yield without using potassium hydroxide and/or sodium hydroxide at all under mild conditions. After the completion of the reaction, the resultant product is dissolved in water, and the aqueous layer is separated to recover the solvent and circulated for reuse. The resultant indoxyl is oxidized to afford an indigo of high quality in high yield.
