Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic powder for a magnetic recording medium having extremely high recording density, by coating the surface of ferromagnetic powder with ultrafine hexagonal Ba ferrite particle. CONSTITUTION:Ba ferrite represented by the general formula: BaO.n(Fel-mM)2O3 is attached on the surface of ferromagnetic powder having mean particle diameter of 20-1,000nm and saturation magnetization of 70lmu/g or higher, where M represents at least one of Co, Ti, Zn, Mn, Ni, In, Cu, Ge and Nb, m=0-0.2 (when M refers to two or more metals, the sum of the respective component ratio=m1+m2+m3+...=m), and n=5.4-6.0. Since the Ba ferrite thus attached on the magnetic powder obtained in this manner has a single magnetic domain structure, its magnetic recording characteristics in a high frequency region is excellent, and since the magnetic characteristics of the Be ferrite itself is utilized in a low frequency region, the magnetic powder having excellent characteristics can be obtained.
