Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve magnetic characteristics of a permanent magnet consisting essentially of rare earth metals and an intermetallic compd. of Co in producing said magnet by setting the heating speed during calcining at specific values or above.
CONSTITUTION: The metallic compounded raw materials of the compsn. consisting of 24W28% Sm as rare earth metal, 0W20% Cu, 0W35% Fe, 0W15% Zr, 0W1% Ti and the balance Co are melted by high frequency induction heating in Ar atmospheric gas. After such alloy is cooled and solidified, it is pulverized and is pressurized and molded in a magnetic field. This is heated and calcined to 1,180W1,230°C at 250°C/hour heating rates in an inert gaseous atmosphere of Ar or the like and is further subjected to a solution heat treatment at 1,150W 1,200°C. In succession to this, it is held at 700W950°C for ≥10 minutes, after which it is cooled at ≤5°C/min cooling rates. The permanent magnet of large residual magnetic flux density, coercive force, and energy product, high curie temp. and excellent magnet characteristics is obtained.
