Abstract

PURPOSE: An acrylic or methacrylic ester and an amine are subjected to dehydration treatment with zeolite and they are made to react in the presence of a tin compound to produce the titled compound of high purity in high yield.
CONSTITUTION: An ester of acrylic or methacryic acid is made react with an aliphatic or aromatic amine in the presence of a tin compound such as dibutyltin oxide to give the objective compound wherein the above reactants are previously dehydrated by passing them through a synthetic or natural zeolite, preferably of 3W5, preferably 3W4Å pore diameter. The use of dehydrated materials prevents the deactivation of the catalyst and almost inhibits the formation of by-products caused by the Michael reaction.
