Abstract

PURPOSE:To effectively prevent the burn-out of catalyst, by providing an overheat preventing device so that the set cooling temperature of the catalyst is changed, according to the volume of exhaust gas. CONSTITUTION:Engine exhaust gas flows from a pipe 4a through a catalyst 3 for purifying the exhaust gas. The purified exhaust gas is then discharged from a pipe 4b. When the volume of exhaust gas is low, local heating to the catalyst is liable to occure so that a diaphragm 13 turns a switch 15 to a contact 16a side due to low exhaust gas pressure, resulting in that an 800 deg.C detecting switch 21a side of an exhaust gas temperature detector 18 is energized. When the temperature is raised to 800 deg.C, a solenoid valve 9 is opened for allowing cooling medium to flow from a pump 8 to a cooling pipe 5 surrounding around the catalyst 3 so as to cool the latter for preventing overheat. meanwhile, when the volume of exhaust gas is high, temperature distribution in the catalyst 3 does not vary so widely, and therefore a 900 deg.C detecting switch 21b side of the exhaust gas temperature detector 18 is energized. When the temperature is raised to 900 deg.C, the catalyst is cooled for preventing buronout as above-mentioned.
