Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a catalyst used for methods of producing alcohol by reducing org. carboxylic acid in one stage of reaction process under relatively mild conditions by agitating and mixing rhenium oxide and org. bases contg. nitrogen or phosphorus thereby joining these.
CONSTITUTION: Rhenium oxide and org. bases are agitated and mixed and a mixture is used as it is as a catalyst or after it is deposited on a porous material such as active carbon. Particularly rhenium oxide of low valency is easy to yield catalysts of high activity as rhenium oxide. Rhenium or compds. other than oxide are also usable, other than rhenium oxide. Nitrogen-contg. compds. such as aliphat. amine or phosphorous-contg. compds. such as org. phosphine are suited as the org. bases. The atm. of the org. bases is in an about 10-4W10 times, more preferably about 10-2W1 times range in molar ratio based on the rhenium compds. The reaction conditions by this catalyst is about 50W500 atmospheric pressure of hydrogen partial pressure and about 80W250°C.
