A light beam emitted from an illuminating unit 15 is made incident to each light emitting optical fiber 16, and is let to a photodetecting element 18 from the photodetecting optical fiber 19 through the detecting part 21. In this case, when the copying paper 2 is passing through the detecting part 21, a light beam is intercepted by the copying paper 2 and does not reach the photodetecting element 18, therefore, a state of the copying paper can be detected from whether a light beam has been detected or not in the photodetecting element, and also its variation.
