PURPOSE:To increase the recording speed of a thermal transfer printer and prevent its master tape from being applied with a excessive force and also prevent a recording medium from being deformed by rewinding the master tape simultaneously in connection with the movement of its thermal head. CONSTITUTION:A master tape supply reel 8 and a rewinding reel 9 are provided on a movable base 13 of a thermal head 6. At the time of recording, when the movable base 13 moves in the direction of an arrow 32, a master tape is rewound by the rewind reel 9 in the direction opposite to the direction of movement of the movable base 13 by the same length as that of movement of the movable base 13. In this manner, upon completion of recording of a line, immediately the printer is able to start the recording of the next line, therefore its recording speed is considerably increased. Since the length of time during which a recording paper 1 and the master tape are pressed together at the same point is short, and the tape is separated from the recording paper 1 immediately after ink is caused to adhere to the spot, a weak rewind torque is sufficient enough. Consequently, a strong tensile stress is not generated in the master tape and the deformation of the recording paper 1 can be prevented.
