Abstract

PURPOSE: Carbon fiber (CF) and graphite fiber (GF) obtained by heat treating CF at high temperature are made to react with alkali metal to produce the titled interlaminar compound having low electrical resistivity and being colored in gold and blue.
CONSTITUTION: Purified graphite containing less than 80ppm mineral impurities is heated in a plasma or over 3,400°C electron temperature into CF and subsequently heated at a temperature of over 2,500°C into GF. The purification of the starting material is effected with a mineral acid such as nitrohydrochloric acid and/or a halogen gas and the heating in a plasma is effected at 4,000W 13,000 electron temperature. The resultant CF or GF is made to react with an alkali metal to give the objective interlaminar compound. For example, when potassium is used, the temperature of potassium t1 is kept at 250°C, the one of GF t2 is kept higher than t1 and t2Wt1 is kept within 100°C to give the golden first-stage interlaminar compound. When the difference is kept 100W200°C, the blue second-stage compound is produced.
