PURPOSE:To effectively prevent the decarburization in rolling process of steel materials by operating a heating furnace in such a way that the residence time of steel materials in the heating furnace until the time when the surface temperature of the steel materials to be heated attains a specific temperature amounts in a specific per cent in the whole residence time. CONSTITUTION:In the operation of a heating furnace in the rolling process of steel materials, the residence time of steel materials to be heated in the furnace until time when the surface temperature of the steel materials attains 650 deg.C is set up so that it amounts 80-90% of the whole residence time. Thus, the ferrite decarburization in the steel materials to be heated can be prevented and the total decarburization depth and the amount of scale formed can therefore be greatly improved.
