Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a (co)polymer excellent in mechanical properties, etc., by solution-(co)polymerizing ethylene in a hydrocarbon solvent with the aid of a novel solid catalyst consisting of an Mg compound and a Ti compound.
CONSTITUTION: Ethylene alone or a mixture of ethylene and other α-olefins is polymerized in a hydrocarbon solvent under conditions under which the formed polymer can be dissolved in the solvent, with the aid of a catalyst system prepared by combining a compound of formula V with a hydrocarbon-insoluble solid prepared by selecting the values of m, n and 1 in formulas II, III and V so that they satisfy the relationship VI, wherein b, c, e and a are the mol numbers of compounds of formulas IIWV, and selecting the mol numbers of compounds of formulasIand II so that they satisfy the relationship VII, wherein d is the mol number of a compound of formulaI, in treating a homogeneous hydrocarbon solution containing a magnesium alcoholate of formula II, an organic Ti compound of formula III and, optionally, a hydroxy compound of formula IV with an orgnaic Al halide of formula V in the presence of a magnesium dihalide of formulaI. It is possible to obtain a (co)polymer excellent in mechanical properties, etc.
