Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a fiber-reinforced metal with small dies and a small capacity heat source in a short sintering time by adding powder of a metal having a sufficiently lower m.p. than a matrix metal to a mixture of powder of the matrix metal with fiber for reinforcement, preliminarily sintering them, and carrying out sintering.
CONSTITUTION: A powdered mixture of a matrix metal or alloy with a metal whose m.p. is several 100°C lower than the m.p. of the matrix metal or alloy, e.g., a powdered mixture of Cu with Sn is mixed with fiber of carbon or the like, packed into dies for molding, and preliminarily sintered by heating in a heating furnace while applying a pressure. The misture of said 3 kinds of substances may be packed into a suitable container, heated in a heating furnace, taken out of the furnace, and preliminarily sintered by immediate pressurization for forging. The heating temp. is higher than the m.p. of Sn, much lower than the m.p. of Cu, and lower than the sintering temp. Accordingly, the Sn is melted without sintering and acts as a binder, and the bulk mixture is made almost equal to an end product in size. The preliminarily sintered body is then sintered at a temp. slightly lower than the m.p. of Cu in dies while applying a pressure to obtain a fiber-reinforced metal.
