PURPOSE:To determine a stress from a change in acoustic velocity of a ultrasonic wave propagating in a bolt and decides the degree of relaxation of the bolt from the stress. CONSTITUTION:A ultrasonic transmitting and receiving element 5 is attached to one end of a steam turbine casing bolt 4, and a trigger signal generated by a single pulse generator 1 is inputted to the element 5. The element 5 receives an echo signal from the bolt bottom, and the echo signal, amplified by an amplifier 6, is caused to pass through a low-pass filter 7 and a high-press filter 8 to remove noise. It is returned as a trigger signal to a pulser 3 via an echo shaping circuit 9, while is sent as a ultrasonic pulse to the element 5 again, and said operations are repeated. The period of the pulse oscillation is accumulated by a universal counter 12 for measurement. A period T both under a no-load condition and a load condition is stored in a comparison circuit 13, and is compared with the period T available after used for a long perid of time to determine a tightening force.
