Abstract
PURPOSE: To enable the preparation of porous active alumina having pore distribution, by blending a raw material for alumina with carbon black, kneading them with a molding auxiliary, molding them, removing carbon black by calcining.
CONSTITUTION: A raw material for Al2O3 such as boehmite, etc. is blended with carbon black uniformly by a mixer, kneaded with water and an auxiliary such as an inorganic acid, organic acid, etc. by a kneader, and molded by extrusion. The molded particles are calcined to remove carbon black by combustion, to prepare porous active alumina. This alumina has a specific surface area of 100W350m2/g, total volume of pores of 0.6W1.5cc/g at diameter of 37.5W75,000Å and at least 90% total pore volume consisting of pores having diameters 37.5W 680Å, having a pore distribution with a clear peak at diameters 40W100Å and a peak at diameters 100W500Å respectively. The titled porous active alumina has porosity wherein pore volume at diameters of 40W100Å has at least 0.45cc/g and pore volume at diameters of 100W600Å has at least 0.1cc/g, and it is excellent as an adsorbent, carrier for catalyst, or catalyst.
