Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the charge-and-discharge cycle life of a zinc alkaline secondary battery such as a nickel zinc battery or a silver-oxide zinc battery, which contains zinc used as a negative active material and an aqueous alkaline solution used as an electrolyte, without deteriorating the utilization rate of the negative active material made of zinc by making a porous titanium-oxide layer to be in close contact with the surface of the negative electrode. CONSTITUTION:A negative active material is prepared by kneading the mixture consisting of 70wt% zinc oxide powder, 25wt% zinc powder and 5wt% a fluorine resin dispersion, and rolling the kneaded mixture into a sheet of 0.8mm. thickness by means of a roller. After that, the above negative active material is cut into a given dimension, and a net-like current collecting body is buried in the negative active material cut, which is wrapped in Japanese paper, thereby obtaining a zinc electrode. A porous titanium- oxide sheet, which is prepared by mixing and kneading 20wt% a fluorine resin dispersion with 80wt% a titanium oxide powder having a mean grain diameter of 0.02mu and rolling the kneaded mixture into a sheet of 0.3mm. thickness, is made to be in close contact with the surface of the above zinc electrode. As for a battery in which the porous titanium oxide layer is made to be in close contact with the surface of the zinc electrode, reduction of battery capacity accompanying the proceeding of the charge-and-discharge cycle is improved, and the life of the battery is increased.
