Abstract

PURPOSE:To detect the connected part of preform rods which is inadequate to be processed to an optical fiber, easily, by placing a discriminative layer between two preform rods to be connected with each other, and detecting the discriminative layer in the optical fiber during or after spinning. CONSTITUTION:A colored quartz disc is placed coaxially between two quartz preform rods 1 and 2, and welded to form a discriminative layer 3. The preform rods 1, 2 are inserted into a furnace 4, and drawn to an optical fiber 5. The optical fiber is monitored with light beam during or after spinning, and the unnecessary part near the detected discriminative layer 3 is removed.
