Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare an oxygen-containing hydrocarbon compound such as acetic acid, acetaldehyde, ethanol, etc., by reacting carbon monoxide with hydrogen in the presence of a rhodium catalyst in combination with boron as a cocatalyst.
CONSTITUTION: In the preparation of acetic acid, acetaldehyde and/or ethanol by the reaction of carbon monoxide with hydrogen in the presence of a rhodium catalyst, the reaction is carried out using boron as a cocatalyst in combination with the rhodium catalyst. The cocatalyst improves the catalytic performance of rhodium, and increases its catalytic activity. The boron compound which can be used as the cocatalyst is, e.g. boric acid, ammonium borate, potassium borate, etc. The content of rhodium in the supported catalyst is pref. 0.1W10wt%, and that of boron is pref. 0.02W10wt%.
