PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound by reacting carbon monoxide with hydrogen in the presence of a rhodium catalyst in combination with a cocatalyst comprising V and at least one substance selected from Zr, Co, Ni, Mg, rare earth elements, Y, U and Th.
CONSTITUTION: In the preparation of acetic acid, acetaldehyde and/or ethanol by reacting carbon monoxide with hydrogen in the presence of a rhodium catalyst, the reaction is carried out using a cocatalyst comprising V and at least one substance selected from Zr, Co, Ni, Mg, rare earth elements, Y, U and Th. The catalyst combined with the cocatalyst has an extremely high activity. The content of rhodium in the supported catalyst is pref. 0.1W10wt%, and those of the cocatalyst components are pref. 0.2W15wt%, each.
