Abstract

PURPOSE:To realize an optical coupling structure which is capable of an optical coupling at a low loss even if the optical axis has some shift, by providing a mode diffusing rod having an uneven distribution of refractive index between a semiconductor laser element and the edge surface of an optical fiber. CONSTITUTION:A semiconductor laser element 2 is put on a base 1 made of a heat sink, etc., and an optical fiber 3 inserted to an optical connector 4 is set opposite to the output edge surface of the laser beam. A mode diffuser 21 has a refractive index of a core glass layer 31 larger than that of a cladding glass layer 32 coating over the layer 31 with an uneven distribution of refractive index as shown in the 3rd figure. Such diffuser 21 is put between the element 2 and the edge surface of the fiber 3. As a result, the light of a simple mode pattern given from the element 2 is diffused into many modes. Accordingly an optical connection is possible with high optical insertion factor even although a slight shift of the optical axis exists between the element 2 and the fiber 3.
