Abstract

PURPOSE: To mutually align the visual angle ranges that give contrast and make display easy to see by constituting the twisting directions and spiral pitches of liquid crystal molecules in a specific relation between two layers in a multilayered twisted nematic (TN) liquid crystal device.
CONSTITUTION: Transparent electrodes 3a, 3b, 3c, 3d, and orientation layers 5a, 5b, 5c, 5d are formed on trasparent substrates 1a, 1b, 1c, and TN liquid crystal layers 2a, 2b are sealed 6a, 6b. Polarizing plates 7a, 7b and a reflection plate 8 are provided on the outer side of the substrates 1a, 1c. The orientation directions r2 2 and r1 2 of the orientation films 5a, 5b are made mutually orthogonal and counterclockwise, and the orientation directions r2 1, r1 1 of the orientation layers 5c, 5d are made mutually orthogonal and clockwise; in addition, the direction r2 1 of the orientation layer 5b are made to differ 180° in direction. Additionally, the absolute values of the intrinsic spiral pitches of the liquid crystal layers 2a, 2b are made approximately equal. In this way, the interference colors of the layers 2a, 2b are made inconspicuous, whereby the contrast is improved and the visual angle ranges are aligned.
