Abstract

PURPOSE: To quench steel with less internal strain by a method wherein steel is heated to a specific temperature and rapidly cooled in the atmosphere of ammonia or ammonia plus cementation and reduction gas while controlling ammonia gas supply.
CONSTITUTION: A quenching treatment with less internal strain is performed for the surface quenching and hardening of steel machine parts, etc. This treament utilizes a phenomenon that the steel surface is nitrided to lower A1-transformation point and nitrogen is permeated into hypoeutectoid steel in austenite state, then martensite is formed under quenching. Quenching treatment atmosphere uses ammonia gas, or a mixture of ammonia and an organic liquid having cementation and reducing properties, such as alcohol, ester, and ketone, or mixture of ammonia and a neutral gas. While controlling ammonia gas supply, steel is heated to a temperature within 50°C above A1 transformation point and then is quenched, thereby forming high-hardness martensite surface structure. Because A1 transformation point is decreased by the nitrogen permeation, little internal strain due to hiating occurs.
