Abstract

PURPOSE: To measure the exact depth of snow cover by a method wherein the quality of a snow is discriminated based on an amplitude of reflection wave signals and a depth of snow cover is corrected in accordance with the discriminated snow quality.
CONSTITUTION: An ultrasonic wave transmitting and receiving device 1 is installed on the ground and emits an ultrasonic wave to the ground surface and then, the depth of a snow cover is measured based on the time from the emission of the wave to the receiving of its reflection wave. The reflection wave is received by the transmitting and receiving device 1 to be converted into an electronic wave and it is sequentially entered in amplification circuits 5W8. Output signals from the amplification circuits 5W8 are entered in comparators 9W12, in each of which a threshold value is set. A microprocessor 15 discriminates a snow quality from the output of comparators 9W12 based on the preset program and reads correction values from an RAM 17 correspond to a snow quality. And this correction value is added to a measured value read out of a counter 16, thus, the exact depth of the snow cover being measured.
