Abstract

PURPOSE: To generate two linear polarized lights differing in polarization surfaces by using one linear polarizing plate provided at the incident side of light together with a twisted nematic liquid crystal cell and by applying an alternate low-frequency voltage and high-frequency voltage between the opposite electrodes.
CONSTITUTION: Between two glass plates 1 equipped with transparent electrodes 2, nematic liquid crystal changing in the sign of dielectric anisotropy according to the frequency of an applied voltage is injected and slanting angle (α) from the substrate surface of liquid crystal molecule 5 should be between 2 and 50°. As a voltage of a low frequency is applied with switch S, light passed through linear polarizing plate 4 passes through the liquid crystal layer without turning the polarization surface, so that linear polarized light parallel to the paper surface can be obtained.
