Abstract

PURPOSE: An impact-resistant, rubber-modified styrene type resin composition having high luster and excellent appearance, prepared by polymerizing a monovinyl aromatic monomer in the presence of a polybutadiene of a specified structure, thereby to form, in the resulting composition, a soft component of a specified structure.
CONSTITUTION: Into 90W99pts.wt. of a monovinyl aromatic monomer such as styrene is dissolved 1W10pts.wt. of polybutadiene (rubbery elastomer) containing 10W25mol% of 1,2-vinyl addition, 25W45mol% of 1,4-cis-addition and 30W 65mol% of 1,4-trans-addition and having a solution viscosity of 30W60cst. Then, the solution is polymerized to form a composition wherein the dispersed particles of the soft component (graft polymer of the rubbery elastomer and the monovinyl aromatic monomer) have an average particle diameter of 0.5W1.5μ, and R represented by the expression, wherein g1 is a content of methyl ethyl ketone-insolubles after heating the composition at 300°C for 5hr in an atmosphere of nitrogen, g2 is a content of methyl ethyl ketone insolubles of the composition, and r is a percentage of the rubbery elastomer in the composition, is in the range: 0.5W5.
