Abstract
PURPOSE:To form the titled photocoupler by which the light transmission line can be switched efficiently, by forming a thin metallic diffusion layer in the photocoupling part, in case of manufacturing the photocoupler, for which the light waveguide line consisting of the metallic diffusion layer. CONSTITUTION:Ti layers 2, 3, 4, and 5, 6, 7 are provided on the optical crystal 1 such as lithium niobate, and a photocoupler is manufactured by diffusing Ti into the optical crystal 1 by mans of heating, and making it a light waveguide line. In case of said manufacturing method, thickness T1 of the Ti layers 3, 6 which are made coupling parts between both the light waveguide lines is made thinner than thickness T2 of other parts (the parts which are separated from each other, drawing a curve as they go away from the coupling parts) (2, 4 and 5, 7). Accordingly, when it is heated, the increase amount of refractive index of the optical crystal 1 becomes small in the coupling part, the effusion of light from one light waveguide line to the other light waveguide line becomes large, and the light switching efficiency can be elevated, shortening the coupling length.
