Abstract

PURPOSE:To make the connection force between each electrode plate and its corresponding current collector firmer and enlarge the connection area between the electrode plate and collector so as to improve the utilization rate of the electrode plate, by fitting together positive and negative electrode plates, each formed into U-shape in cross-section, and rolling the thus-fit electrode plates. CONSTITUTION:A positive electrode plate 3 and negative electrode plate 4 are each formed by bending anelectrode plate, which is in turn made of a multi-porous metallic core material and coated with an active material 2 while leaving a central portion 1 uncoated and exposed, into a U-shape at the central portion 1. Then, the thus-prepared positive and negative electrodes 3, 4 each having a U-shaped cross- section are fit together with a separator 5 of an N-shaped cross-section interposed therebetween and rolled from one end thereof to form an electrode unit. By assembling the electrode unit, current collectors 7, 7' and other components, a battery is fabricated. This assembly method can aviod development of internal short circuits resulting from electrode displacement caused upon rolling electrodes. It is also possible to improve considerably the high rate discharge characteristics.
