Abstract

PURPOSE:To heat easily the surface of a stationary stepped shaft uniformly at one shot, by heating the larger diameter part of the stepped shaft for a prescribed time with a shield member inserted between the smaller diameter part of the stepped shaft and a heating coil, then by withdrawing the shield member. CONSTITUTION:A shield member 3 made of material of high electric conductance is inserted along a gas between the external periphery of the smaller diameter part 2b of a stepped shaft 2 and an induction heating coil 1. In such a situation, the application of electric current to the induction coil 1 allows to continue the heating of the larger diameter part 2a, but the smaller diameter part 2b is hardly heated because it is covered with the shield member 3. After a prescribed time, the shield member 3 is withdrawn out of the induction coil 1 by the displacement of a rod 5 caused by the operation of a cylinder 4, hereby the smaller diameter part 2b is heated with the magnetic flux generated by the coil 1. This method facilitates one shot uniform heating of the surface of stationary stepped shaft 2.
