Abstract

PURPOSE: To minimize pumping loss of an internal combustion engine having multiple cylinders, by providing vacuum controlling throttle valves at a downstream portion of respective branch passages of intake manifold, and elminating interaction between these cylinders by controlling the opening of said throttle valves according to the engine load.
CONSTITUTION: Carburetor 12 having throttle valve 11 is disposed on the upstream side of intake mainfold 2, and vacuum controlling throttle valves 15aW15b are provided in respective branch passages 14aW14d on the downstream side of manifold 2. These throttle valves 15aW15b are fixed to connecting rod 16. During partial-load operation of engine, flow restricting effect of throttle valve 11 in carburetor 12 is low since its opening is larger than that of throttle valves 15aW15d. Further, since fairly high resistance is acted to air flow through branch passages 14aW14d, partial vacuum developed at one of the passages 14aW14d exerts little influence to other passages. Thus, the absolute value of partial vacuum in the branch passages becomes small, so that pumping loss can be minimized.
