Abstract
PURPOSE: To effectively purify the exhaust of an internal combustion engine at three or more exhaust ports of cylinders by collecting those ports just behind them to be communicated with each other or providing a balance pipe in order to gain the same sectional area of each cylinder's exhaust port.
CONSTITUTION: When this invention is applied to an internal combustion engine with horizontal opposed type six cylinders, three combustion chambers 2aW2c are horizontally arranged at equal intervals in one of two cylinder heads 1 which are respectively mounted on both sides of a cylinder block. In the two combustion chambers 2a, 2b, respective exhaust valves 3a, 3b are disposed close to each other and intake valves 4a, 4b are externally put aside respective valves 3a, 3b. In the other last combustion chamber 2c, an exhaust valve 3c is placed in a nearer position to the combustion chamber 2b. Exhaust ports 9a, 9b are curved in the shape of U and collected together for communication at an exhaust port reactor 11 of a greater capacity. The exhaust port 9b and an exhaust port 9c are also collected in a little wider U shape for communication at the reactor 11. The reactor 11 is communicated with two exhaust pipes via outlets 12a, 12b.
