Abstract

PURPOSE: To increase the charging efficiency of an engine, by providing intake ports independent from each other and opened on the opposite sides of the cylinder head, in the manner that the center lines of these intake ports are displaced from each other on the opposite sides of a plane perpendicular to the center line of the crank shaft and involving the centers of cylinders.
CONSTITUTION: A combustion chamber 10 is provided with the first intake port 12 having a small diameter and the second intake port 14 having a large diameter. These two intake ports 12, 14 are opened and closed by the first intake valve 16 and the second intake valve 18, respectively. The first intake port 12 is opened on the left side 20 of cylinder head 4 while the second intake port 14 is opened on the right side 22 of the cylinder head 4. Here, arrangement is such that centers 24, 26 of respective intake ports 12, 14 are displaced from each other on the opposite sides of a plane 32 perpendicular to the center line 28 of the crank shaft and involving the longitudinal center line 30 of combustion chambers 10. With such an arrangement, mixture introduced into combustion chamber 10 from intake ports 12, 14 can produce swirl in the same direction.
