Abstract
PURPOSE: To produce hydrogen chloride gas for oxychlorination reaction, economically, without deposition of nickel chloride on the catalyst, by the selective hydrogenation of acetylene existing in hydrogen chloride gas using a small amount of a highly active catalyst composed of Pd supported on a honeycomb-shaped carrier.
CONSTITUTION: Hydrogen chloride gas for the oxychlorination reaction is prepared by the hydrogenation of acetylene existing in hydrogen chloride gas using a catalyst composed of Pd supported on a honeycomb-shaped carrier (e.g. a commercially available formed alumina, cordierite, etc.). The catalyst is especially useful for the hydrogenation of acetylene contained in hydrogen chloride gas separated from the thermal cracking product of 1,2-dichloroethane, to obtain hydrogen chloride gas suitable for the production of 1,2-dichloroethane by the oxychlorination reaction. The conversion of acetylene, the selectivity of ethylene, and the purity of 1,2-dichloroethane can be improved.
