Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a permanent magnet alloy having excellent magnetic characteristics by adding specific amounts of Zr and one or more of Ca, S, P, B, and Mg to a Cu-added type R-Co intermetallic compound containing less rare earth elements.
CONSTITUTION: A permanent magnet alloy consists of an intermetallic compound of the formula R(Co1-x-y-α-βFexCuyMαMβ')A, where R is one or two or more of rare earth elements such as Sm, Ce, etc., M is Zr, M' is one or two or more of Ca, S, P, B, and Mg, and x, y, α, and β are in the relationships 0.01≤x≤0.4, 0.02≤ y≤0.25, 0.001≤α≤0.15, 0.001≤β≤0.15, and 6.0≤A≤8.3. Said alloy is ground into a fine powder, oriented in a magnetic field, and molded by a hydrostatic pressure press. The molding thus obtained is sintered under vacuum, solutionized, quickly cooled under water, and then subjected to an aging treatment to obtain a permanent magnet alloy which is excellent in magnetic characteristics such as residual magnetic flux density, coercive force, energy product, etc.
