PURPOSE:To detect a track on the optical disk swiftly and exactly at all times, by detecting an envelope of frequency component of the recording information from the regenerative signal. CONSTITUTION:When the optical head is made to access in the radial direction on the optical disk, only the frequency component (FM signal component) of the recording information among the regenerative signals obtained from the photoelectric converter 1 is output from the band amplifier 3. When the envelope detector 4 detects the envelope of this output signal waveform and outputs it to the comparator 6, the comparator 6 compares it with the reference level L from the reference level generator 5, and outputs the result as a track detecting signal. As a result of the foregoing, a track can be detected swiftly and exactly at all times without being influenced by flaws, dust, etc. on the optical disk.
