Abstract
PURPOSE: An acrylic or methacrylic ester bearing an aromatic ring is incorporated as a monomer giving a larger refractive index than fiber glass to produce the titled composition of methyl methacrylate with no reduction in productivity.
CONSTITUTION: A methyl methacrylate syrup composed of (A) 100pts.wt. of monomer mixture containing (a) 20W95wt% of methyl methacrylate, (b) 30W 1wt% of vinyl aromatic hydrocarbon, (c) 50W4wt% of acrylic and/or methacrylic ester bearing an aromatic ring and of (B) 0W10, preferably 0.1W5.0pts. of a compound bearing 2 or more ethylenically unsaturated copolymerizable groups, is combined with fiber glass at a ratio of 30W95 the syrup/70W5 fiber glass. The addition of the compound having 2 or more ethylenically unsaturated groups increases the polymerization rate and gives products having improved properties such as strength or chemical resistance.
