Abstract

PURPOSE: To obviate the use of motors and rotary plates, miniaturize the chopper and reduce its driving power by periodically changing the reflectance or transmittance of light of a liquid crystal thereby entering the light into the crystal.
CONSTITUTION: Since a multivibrator 32 using an integrated circuit as a driving circuit is connected to a liquid crystal 31, the liquid crystal 31 periodically repeats a transparent state and an opaque state. On the other hand, a light signal 33 is led from an optical fiber 34 via a lens 35 into the liquid crystal 31; when the liquid crystal 31 is transparent, the light transmits through the liquid crystal 31 and when opaque, it is reflected by the liquid crystal surface and enters a photodetector 37 via a lens 36. This results in that at this time the light entering the photodetector 37 is periodically chopped.
