Abstract

PURPOSE: The reaction mixture of 2,2,2-trichloroehtanol and methacrylic acid in the presence of concentrated sulfuric acid is treated in two steps with metal carbonate and alkali hydroxide to remove unreacted starting materials separately as well as sulfuric acid to produce high-purity title compound in high yield.
CONSTITUTION: In the presence of concentrated or fuming sulfuric acid, the reaction of 2,2,2-trichloroethanol with methacrylic acid is effected. The reaction mixture is brought into contact with at least one selected from metal carbonates and metal bicarbonates or its aqueous solution to remove unreacted methacrylic acid and sulfuric acid, then treated with an aqueous solution of at least one selected from alkali metal hydroxides and alkaline earth metal hydroxides to remove unreactive 2,2,2-trichloroehtanol, thus giving the objective compound.
EFFECT: The unreacted starting materials are recovered in separated steps and they can be reused advantageously.
USE: A starting material of polymer useful as a material sensitive to radiation.
