Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the high purity title compound in high yield by the neutralization of (metha)acrylic acid with an alkali in an epihalohydrin which is a starting material, without using inert organic solvents.
CONSTITUTION: (Metha)acrylic acid is slowly added to the suspension of an alkali metal carbonate and/or bicarbonate (≥equivalent to the above acid) in epihalohydrin (excess or equivalent to the above acid); and the produced water is azeotropically distilled, together with the epihalohydrin, out of the reaction mixture to form an alkli metal salt of the above acid. The reaction mixture is neutralized, a catalyst is added thereto and then an alkali metal salt of (metha)acrylic acid and epihalohydrin are allowed to react to give the objective compound.
EFFECT: Since the starting material is not diluted in the esterification reaction, the reaction proceeds rapidly and the reaction time is shortened. Excess epihalohydrin can be easily recovered.
