Abstract

PURPOSE:To perform an easy start of electric discharge and reduce the time required for a restart, by applying voltage across electrodes in such a state that the electrode situated in an end part at the opposite side to an end part provided with the coolest point in a luminous tube is partially heated. CONSTITUTION:Main electrodes 2, 3 are arranged in the both ends of a luminous tube 1 and a filament 5 consisting of tungsten is connected to the main electrode 2. a suitable amount of mercury and argon of auxiliary start gas are sealed in the inside of the luminous tube 1. The main electrodes 2, 3 through their respective lead wires 8, 9 while the filament 5 through a lead wire 10 are connected to a starter device. Then for a restart of the tube, providing such a state that the filament 5 is heated by flowing an electric current in the filament 5 through the lead wires 8 and 10 from the starter device 12, voltage is applied across the main electrodes 2, 3 through the read wires 8 and 9 from the starter device 12 to start electric discharge.
