PURPOSE:To perform easy operation of starting electric discharge in a lamp and decrease a time for restarting the lamp, by applying required voltage to between electrodes in a state that a filament is heated. CONSTITUTION:To the inside of a luminous tube 1, made of quartz, provided in a high pressure mercury vapor lamp where main electrodes 2, 3 are arranged at its both ends to apply an electron emission material to one main electrode 2 of them and connect a filament, mercury and start-assisting argon gas are sealed. The main electrodes 2, 3 are connected to a lighting device 12 through leads 8, 9 respectively. If voltage from a power source 13 is applied to the high pressure mercury vapor lamp through the lighting device 12, electric discharge is started across the electrodes 2, 3. For restarting operation after the high pressure mercury vapor lamp is once turned off, the electric discharge is started by applying voltage to between the main electrodes 2, 3 in a state that the filament 5 is heated.
