Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain an alkaline battery of a large capacity and a low cost, which has an anode made of lead dioxide and a cathode made of zinc, by using a caustic alkali solution containing chromate ions as either the anode-side electrolyte only or both the anode-side and the cathode-side electrolyte. CONSTITUTION:A battery is constituted by the combination of an anode 3 made up of lead dioxide used as an active material and about 10wt% of graphite, a zinc negative electrode 4 made up of an amalgamated zinc and carboxymethylcellulose, a separator 5 consisting of a grafted polyethylene and cellophane, and a liquid holding material 6 made of nonwoven cloth. A caustic alkali solution which is made up of, for example, 2mol of NaOH, 0.1mol of Na2CrO4 and 0.2mol of ZnO and which contains chromate ions is used as either the anode-side electrolyte only or both the anode-side and the cathode-side electrolyte. When a semipermeable membrane such as cellophane is used for the separator 5, an electrolyte usually used for an alkaline battery may be used as the cathode-side electrolyte. By the means mentioned above, the preservation characteristics of the battery is increased, and lead dioxide can be used in the battery. Consequently, a battery of a large capacity density can be obtained at a low cost.
