Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful as a raw material of urethanes, etc., easily, in high selectivity, without using a large excess of water nor producing by-products, by reacting a ≥3C alkylene oxide with water in the presence of carbon dioxide and metallic molybdenum catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: The titled compound is prepared by reacting (A) 1 mole a ≥3C alkylene oxide such as propylene oxide, butylene oxide, etc., with (B) 1W5 moles, pref. 1.01W2.5 moles water, in the presence of (C) 0.0001W1 mole carbon dioxide (CO2 gas or a compound which generates CO2, such as soduim carbonate) and (D) a catalyst comprising molybdenum metal and/or a molybdenum compound (e.g. molybdenum dioxide), at room temp. to 250°C.
