Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare an alkylene glycol, especially monoalkylene glycol, in high selectivity, easily, economically, without producing by-products, by reacting a ≥3C alkylene oxide with water in the presence of a catalyst comprising metallic tungsten or a tungsten compound.
CONSTITUTION: Alkylene glycols are prepared by reacting a ≥3C alkylene oxide with water in the presence of a catalyst comprising metallic tungsten (pref. metallic tungsten having large specific surface area) or a tungsten compound (e.g. sodium tungstate, potassium tungstate, etc.). The alkylene glycols thus prepared is composed mainly of monoalkylene glycol, and contains little polyalkylene glycol by- products such as dialkylene glycol, trialkylene glycol, etc.
