Abstract

PURPOSE: To easily obtain a paint film applicable to line coating, in recoating an alkyl silicate-bonded zinc powder paint film on a thick metal article with a variety of paints, by preheating the metal article to be coated at a proper temperature.
CONSTITUTION: A metal plate or rod having a thickness or diameter of about 4mm or more is preheated at 40W90°C. When a zinc powder paint containing ethyl silicate or the like as a binder is applied onto the surface of the metal article, a solvent is rapidly dispersed by the preheat and the applied paint layer becomes recoatable within a very short period. Just thereafter, the uncured paint film P is coated with an aqueous dispersion paint T drying at an ordinary temperature, e.g. an acrylic- modified alkyd resin or the like, so that a dry paint film will have a thickness of 30W300μ. The said preheating enables the apply of a paint film having an objective thickness, raises a temperature of moisture in the paint film T penetrating into or being in contact with the paint film P, and accelerates the curing of the paint film P and the drying of the paint T. If the preheating temperature is below the lower limit, these effects are not attained. If the preheating temperature exceeds the upper limit, both of the paint films are not obtained in a uniform and normal state, and the dispersion of moisture from the paint T is too rapid to expect a sufficient curing effect of the paint film P.
